This site is a century-old urban rift torn open in Rome, Italy. As a result of Mussolini’s urban planning, existing buildings were demolished and the historic streetscape was destroyed. We seek to stitch this fragmented urban fabric back together through the concept of a Beacon of Civilization.
By interpreting the urban fabric, the building design emerges organically, with a layout that integrates naturally into its context. Boundaries are strategically set back to create a generous plaza, conceived as a transitional space for dialogue between the city and the building.
Within this realm, a structural frame supports functional blocks including student accommodation, a dining hall, and communal activity spaces. These volumes are suspended within the frame, forming an architectural composition that evokes lightness and rhythm, resembling a floating lantern.
The design not only responds to the functional needs of the school expansion but also conveys an artistic and inspiring vision. The suspended form and structural frame symbolize the openness and creativity inherent in educational spaces, becoming a luminous beacon that resonates with the urban fabric and the genius loci of the place.
