The designbrief
设计概要
As a regionalbank, Caisse dEpargne, a member of the BPCE group, shouldbe part of the French territorial reform adopted by President Hollande in2015.It had two regional headquarters : one in Besançon and one in Dijon, the latterbeing located in two adjacent but not adjoining buildings.
作为一家地区性银行,法国巴黎银行(Caisse d'Epargne)是BPCE集团的成员之一,理应成为奥朗德总统在2015年通过的法国领土改革的一部分。法国巴黎银行有两个地区总部:一个在贝桑鬆,另一个在第戎,后者位于两个相邻但不相邻的建筑物内。
It is in thiscontext, as part of its business project aimed at accelerating itstransformation, the Caisse dEpargne BFC wanted a new head office inDijon which aims to be exemplary.Owner of forests in the Morvan, a low mountainmassif a few kilometers from Dijon, the Caisse dEpargne wantedto be a new head office demonstrating local resources but not ostentatious forits members, testifying to its environmental commitment.

Concepts

The main idea wasfor a wooden demonstrator building inscribed on a sloping ground. Like an openbook on the great landscape, the book of the history of wood construction inFrance. This square facing the large landscape that wants to show and explainin an educational way what wood construction is.

The building isthen part of a structuralist reflection: show the structure, show the formaldissociation between structural elements, according to their role and theirstructural behavior: “dynamic” for the bracingexoskeleton, but “static” for the post­beamof the facades with timber frame filling.

Highlight

The client wasfirst convinced by the use of local forest wood as part of their investment,this point particularly responded to their local economic roots. They were alsohit by the form : a two level base, stable and anchored to its land, and a 4level upper part. Fun fact, this form was for them the expression of a bank “seat” which is theFrench translation of a headquarters.

Location andposition of the building

Located in ZACValmy , a new business district in the northern outskirts of Dijon, theheadquarters of the Caisse d’épargne of Bourgogne Franche-Comté is served by a circular boulevard (RN 274)and line 2 of tramway, Pôle Santé” station. Theplots eastern and western slopes (8300 m2)welcome parking for visitors. Employees park their vehicles in the concretebase as well as in the parking silo built in wooden structure, at the sites north. Not only does the natural slope ofthe ground allow a
single storeyaccess to the bases parking, but it also installs a slightlyoverhanging ground floor level, so that users benefit from a clear view on theenvironment.

The design of thisbuilding, draped in its exo wooden structure, echoes the half-timbered housesof the historic center of Dijon. The half-timbering is the set of beams formingthe framework of a wall, this wooden frame is made up of wooden sections whosebeams delimit the filling compartments. In the history of French construction,half-timbered houses have been present for many centuries. This constructivemethod of small wooden elements highlights the use of local resources,available in reasonable quantities.
这座建筑的设计采用外木结构,与第戎历史中心的半木结构房屋相呼应。半木结构是一组樑构成了一堵墙的框架,这个木框架是由木段组成的,木段的樑界定了填充隔间。在法国建筑史上,半木结构房屋已经存在了许多世纪。这种小木构件的建设性方法突出了当地资源的使用,可在合理的数量。
It was with theFirst World War, the loss of many carpenters and their know-how in the trenchesas well as the arrival of reinforced concrete that stopped the evolution ofthis construction method.

This large-scalebuilding wishes to highlight the pursuit of French know-how of traditionalcarpentry and the reasoned use of materials.

The main entranceis located on Françoise Giroud avenue, facing the tramway, where the architectsdesigned a large covered parvis (ground made with Bourgogne stones), lengthenedby a succession of interior and exterior crossing spaces: patio, lobby, atrium,secondary entrance hall, from which one joins the parking silo. Fully glazed,this spatial structure of the ground floor’s central part generates two wingswith distinct functions. The first one, at the east, shelters the sports halland rooms for logistics (mail treatment for instance). The second one, at thewest, presents a public vocation, with training and reception rooms.

Every office(mainly 300 m2 platters) and meeting rooms (placed between the atrium and thepatio) benefit from a natural direct lightening. Refuting tertiary real estatestandards, its doubling of corridors and its built thickness between 18 and 21meters, GRAAM devoted themselves to diversify user’s experience of the Caisse d’épargne,and their relation to exterior.

COMPLEMENTARYLEVELS

The last fourlevels’ thickness, comparable to the one of housing buildings, is only 13.5meters. This modest dimension in terms of rentability is compensated by theimportant superficy of the first two levels (40.50 x 62 m), whose center islightened by the atrium as well as by the patio. Goal: create an interiorisedenvironment, complementary to the extrovert universes of peripheral spaces andsuperior levels, which offer aerial panoramas on Dijon and its countrysides.

The building isset on a slope, facing a landscape where, in good weather, the peak of MontBlanc rises in the distance. Its glazed skin, placed lightly on the timberexostructure, allows the wooden mesh to appear or to reflect the greatlandscape, making the building disappear, depending on the weather. The formaldissociation of the structural elements, according to their role and behaviorallowed the realization of a bioclimatic ventilated double skin. Made of simpleextra-clear glass, the external wall of the latter is suspended from the upperbeams of the wooden exoskeleton. The combination of concrete, timber, steel andglass makes this building unique.
这座建筑坐落在一个斜坡上,面对着一片风景,在天气好的时候,勃朗峰的顶峰在远处升起。它的釉脸皮肤,轻轻地放在木材外部结构,允许木製网格出现或反映伟大的景观,使建筑消失,这取决于天气。根据其作用和行为,结构元素的正式分离允许实现一个生物气候通风的双层皮肤。后者的外墙由简单的超透明玻璃製成,悬挂在木质外骨骼的上部横梁上。混凝土、木材、钢材和玻璃的组合使这座建筑独具特色。



A building withthe least possible impact

The forceful ideaof GRAAM: investing on the territory and projecting into the future ! In otherwords : realizing a demonstrative building on wooden structure, by local firms,recalling that the Bourgogne Franche-Comté region has wide forests, which hasthe least possible impact on its environment.

The building isbuilt 100% dry process (and offsite) and has 2579 m3 of wood, that is 2579 T ofstored CO2. Built to a high thermal standard (passive building), it consumesonly 15 kW/h per m² annually. The implementation of the smart buildingcertification (R2S) allows an open and communicating building.

Generalizing theuse of CLT to build a wooden building is debatable. This process, native fromAustria where resiniferous trees are abundant and renewable in only a fewdecades, poorly harmonizes with the French constructive tradition, consumingless materials, for correlated to a wooded patrimony essentially composed byhardwood which growth is much slower (about 80 years).

Materialoptimization

Faithful to theirrequirement in matters of material optimization ( the right material in theright place), GRAAM has drawn a supporting structure made of glulam posts (arow on the facade, and a double row in the central circulation), on which standLVL longitudinal beams in and glulam transversal beams. Cross Laminated Timberis only used in two cases, when they are strictly necessary for bracing : corewalls and center circulation floors , in which transit wind loads aretransmitted by the triangled exoskeleton.

A green energybuilding

Wood, a livingmaterial, allows a natural regulation of the ambient hygrometry. The materialsused in the office spaces, all classified A+ in terms of VOC emissions,combined with a ventilation system that allows for air renewal above the norm,ensures high indoor air quality. Cooling is achieved by an adiabatic system ofcooling the water network passing through the technical ceilings. The buildingis connected to district heating: a city network heated by biomass, 100%renewable energy.
Heating andcooling is made by radiation from the ceiling.
木材是一种活的材料,可以自然调节环境湿度。办公空间所使用的材料,在VOC排放方面都被归类为A+,加上通风系统,允许空气更新高于标准,确保了高室内空气质量。冷却是通过一个通过技术天花板冷却水网络的绝热系统实现的。该建筑连接到区域供热:一个由生物质供热的城市网络,100%可再生能源。加热和冷却是由天花板的辐射产生的。


Safety andsecurity of occupants

The building isdivided into 300 m² platforms intersected by fireproof walls for 1 hour. Thethree vertical circulations are also partitioned, fireproof for 1 hour andtheir interior lining is incombustible.
该建筑被划分为300平方米的平台,由防火墙相交1小时。三个垂直循环也被划分,防火1小时,其内衬是不燃的。

Dry risers locatedin the staircase may be used, provided that they open less than 40 m from afire hydrant.On the largest facade (North West facade) each level is accessibleby a firefighter access materialized on the facade by a red dot.

The bioclimaticdouble skin is cut against fire every two levels, and the large ventilationgrids allow the smoke, if necessary, to evacuate quickly.
